The English along with Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
